Ex-MP Darryl Maguire’s next move over ICAC charges

The former lover of ex-NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian was earlier this year charged with lying during an inquiry into a Sydney council.

‘Pathetic’: Some are still making ‘lame excuses’ for Berejiklian’s corrupt conduct

Gladys Berejiklian’s former lover will know more in the next few months after he was charged with giving false and misleading evidence to the corruption watchdog.

Daryl Maguire, the ex-Wagga Wagga MP, was in June charged in relation to an inquiry into the former Canterbury Council.

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) said Mr Maguire, 64, was charged in relation to Operation Dasha, which probed allegations that several councillors engaged in corrupt conduct.

He was charged with one count of giving false or misleading evidence at a public inquiry.

The matter was mentioned briefly on Monday in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court where Maguire was represented by solicitor Jim Harrowell AM.

The matter was adjourned until October, with prosecutors to deliver a brief of evidence by September.

Mr Maguire has not entered a plea.

He was charged with the offences just days before ICAC handed down damning findings that Mr Maguire and Ms Berejiklian both engaged in “serious corrupt conduct”.

Mr Maguire began dating the former premier in 2015, but their five-year “close personal relationship” wasn’t revealed until she gave evidence during the ICAC hearings into Operation Keppel, a probe into Mr Maguire’s conduct in office.

That matter is unrelated to Operation Dasha, over which he has been charged.

Mr Maguire was found to have improperly used his public office during his time as an MP in order to promote his own financial interests and those of his associates while deliberately not disclosing his position and potential pecuniary benefits.
