A grass fire burning near the Barossa Valley in South Australia has been contained, but authorities are warning residents to remain alert.

An emergency warning was earlier issued for Templers – north of Adelaide – as the fire burned under severe weather conditions.

The warning was downgraded to an advice message just after 3pm when the Country Fire Service said the fire was contained.

However, anyone in the area of the blaze is warned there is still a risk of further breakouts.

“Crews will remain in attendance throughout the day patrolling the area, completing control lines and responding to any active fire,” it said.

“A predicted wind change for later this afternoon may cause outbreaks or embers to travel to the east and to the northeast of the current fire ground.”

The fire ground is within an area north of Angus Road, west of Thiele Highway and south of Templers Road.

“To ensure your safety and that of the large number of emergency services personnel who are working in the area, please do not enter the area unless necessary,” the CFS said.

Residents are also warned that hazards may include reduced visibility due to smoke, fallen trees across roads and emergency vehicles in the area.

Earlier, a CFS spokeswoman said the fire had so far burned about 658ha, and 228 firefighters from 38 trucks were on the scene.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

South Australia is sweltering under severe weather conditions, with parts of the state reaching more than 40C.

Roseworthy, about 7km south of Templers, was forecast to reach a maximum of 44C and reached 43.2C by 2pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued an extreme fire danger rating for the Mount Lofty Ranges on Friday.

A severe rating applies for the West Coast, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Lower South East districts.
