Cases of coronavirus have been linked to a hospital in Melbourne’s inner south, raising concerns of infections in vital frontline healthcare workers.

The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed they were investigating cases linked to a ward at the Alfred Hospital but did not disclose which section of the South Yarra hospital.

It comes as DHHS sent out thousands of text messages to people living in the Casey community this week, with an outbreak of 34 cases linked to the southeastern local government area.

Fifteen infections were also linked to Footscray Hospital in Melbourne’s west.

Melbourne is on a mission to maintain its downward virus trend, with the average daily case number for metropolitan Melbourne dropping to 42.7 after the state recorded 45 new infections on Friday.

Metropolitan Melbourne must reach an average daily case rate of between 30 and 50 cases over the preceding fortnight to trigger an easing of lockdown measures from September 28.

The Alfred Hospital has been contacted for comment.
