David Warner will make the leap to TV commentary when he retires

His MCG double-hundred may have pushed David Warner’s test retirement back but he’s already confirmed a big post-career move.

David Warner set to join the Fox Cricket team

David Warner’s future after cricket has been revealed with the Aussie opener set to join the Fox Cricket commentary team “for as long as he wants” once his playing days are over.

Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany made the announcement at the SCG on Tuesday morning as the company confirmed its commitment to cricket with a monster TV rights deal alongside Seven West Media.

Warner committed to touring India and England this year after his epic double-century in the Boxing Day test at the MCG but may not be in the test team for longer beyond those tours.

The Fox commentary team lost two of its leadings figures when Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds tragically passed away last year, and while it’s impossible to replace them, Delany said that Warner was the best choice from the current squad to step in.

The Aussie opener did a bit of work with them during his sandpaper scandal ban and has been given a job for “as long as he wants”, with the 36-year-old’s future unknown after what will be a hectic 2023 campaign.

“It’s not possible to replace Shane and Andrew,” Delany said.

“We’ve thought long and hard about what we might do with the coverage.

“When you’ve got names like (Adam) Gilchrist, (Isa) Guha, (Mike) Hussey, (Allan) Border), (Mark) Waugh and (Mel) Jones, it’s a very big team.

“If you had one shot at a commentator of the current crop to replace those two, you’d probably have to say Dave Warner is the name. He’s a brawler, he’s a fighter and he’s exciting from the moment he stepped onto the paddock.

“We had the Big Bash in 2011 when he first came to real dominance, and we’re very glad that we’ve signed him for now and the future.

“We think he’ll be a very good cricket commentator.”
