David Warner will make his return to the field in a one-day game for NSW on Thursday

Test opener David Warner has moved to allay fears over the long-term impacts of his groin injury by committing to make a cricketing return for NSW this week.

Superstar batsman David Warner will make his cricketing return for NSW in a one day game on Thursday.

Just a week after the opener revealed the groin injury he suffered last November would continue to hamper him for “months”, he has been included in the team that will take on South Australia in Adelaide.

But while Warner is back, Steve Smith remains sidelined with an elbow injury which flared up in his return for NSW last week.

Blues coach Phil Jaques said Warner, who hasn’t played since the fourth Test against India at the Gabba in January, has done the work to get back.

“We all know Davey’s quality as a player in all formats and it’s great to see him back for the Blues for this game,” Jaques said.

“He has worked really hard on his rehab and has been great around the group when he’s been at training.

“It will be fantastic to have his experience around the team over the coming weeks.”

In commentary during Australia’s opening T20 clash against New Zealand last week, Warner said his groin issues would have to be managed for a long time and he would have to play with pain.

“I have spoken to a few people that have actually had that type of injury and they have just said it’s a niggle. You have just got to teach your brain to not worry about the pain and that it’s not going to happen again,” Warner told Fox Cricket.

“It’s just getting back that confidence to side step and run as hard as I can and dive around again,” he said.

“Once I get that, I will be right to go. It’s just not 100 per cent there yet.″⁣

Warner missed the opening two Tests against India after hurting his groin in the field during a one-day game at the SCG last November.

Pat Cummins will again captain the NSW one-day team.
