It comes on a horror day for NSW after the state recorded its highest number of new cases, with 291 infections and one death, the 22nd person to die from the virus in the current outbreak.

The Hunter and Upper Hunter regions are in their first day of a week-long snap lockdown after five new cases were reported in Newcastle and another eight found in the Central Coast region on Thursday.

NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant on Friday confirmed another two cases had been recorded in Newcastle.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said at least 50 of the state’s new cases were infectious in the community and warned the public to expect more high numbers over the “next few days”.

“I’d like everybody to prepare themselves for higher case numbers in the next few days just based on the trend in the last few days,” she said.

“Where things are going, I am expecting higher case numbers in the next few days and I just wanted everyone to be prepared for that.”

There have been 4610 locally acquired cases reported since the outbreak began on June 16.
