Childcare centre, popular shopping mall among growing list of Qld exposure sites

New venues have joined more than 100 exposure sites in Queensland, after a positive case fled Sydney’s lockdown.

A Kmart is among three new Gold Coast venues to have been added to a growing list of more than 100 Covid-19 exposure sites in Queensland.

Residents in the state’s southeast are on high alert after a NSW man, who is accused of illegally fleeing locked-down Sydney despite knowing he was a close contact of someone with the virus, is believed to have transmitted it to a Queensland flight attendant.

Queensland health authorities on Monday afternoon issued new alerts for several venues of concern.

Anyone who was in the beauty section of the Helensvale Westfield Kmart between 5pm and 5.30pm on July 12 is considered a casual contact who must isolate, get tested for the virus and remain in quarantine until they receive a negative result.

That Westfield shopping centre is also now considered a low risk exposure site for people who visited between 9am and 10.45am on July 24.

They need to get tested but don’t need to isolate unless they have symptoms.

Queensland Health has also issued new low risk warnings for Sporty’s Warehouse in Bundall, from 1pm to 1.45pm on July 19, and the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre in Broadbeach Waters, between 1.15pm and 2.45pm on July 24.

Authorities had already listed more than 50 venues they consider “close contact” sites, including an adult entertainment store, multiple restaurants and a Goodstart Early Learning childcare centre in Parkwood visited several times between July 12 and 23.

Acting Premier Steven Miles has warned Queenslanders to expect more cases in coming days.

One new locally acquired case was announced on Monday.

The new case – a man in his 40s who had travelled from China – tested negative upon completing the two weeks of hotel quarantine.

Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young said the man returned to his home on the Gold Coast on July 12 and became unwell the day after.

“We got a second test done and that’s come back at a moderate level of CT value, which means there’s a reasonable amount of virus,” Dr Young said.

“That means he’s definitely at the acute stage of a new infection.”
