Central Coast blaze triggers NYE pandemonium after A-League game
A roaring fire broke out on NYE, sparking chaos in a crowded celebration spot, as thousands more were leaving the area following an A-League game.
Thousands of Central Coast Residents were sent fleeing on New Year’s Eve when an unexplained grass fire engulfed a busy park.
Crowds from the A-League's game between Melbourne FC and The Central Coast Mariners at Industree Group Stadium, as well as those in the area for NYE celebrations had packed the precinct when the incident started sometime around 9.30pm.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, one witness said the heard “a loud bang” just prior to when the fire broke out on Dane Drive.
“Then within a few minutes the kids playground area was on fire. It was full of families just moments earlier.”
Police who were already on standby for the game and general New Year’s festivities then sprung into action and cleared the street of pedestrians.
While the cause of the blaze is still unknown, a police investigation is underway.
One person who witnessed the fire was Football commentator Simon Hill, who posted about the incident on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“Could be a long journey home”, he wrote alongside a picture of the blaze.
“Happy new year everyone.”
He later added the “likeliest explanation” for the blaze was a stray firework from the 9pm display.
“Was put out very quickly and we all got out within 25 mins. Good job, firies!”
