Barry Cable dumped from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame

The horrific court findings against a disgraced AFL champion have prompted his name to be erased from an esteemed list.

Disgraced former AFL legend Barry Cable has been removed from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame after a court found he had repeatedly sexually assaulted a girl during his playing career.

AFL officials dumped Cable, who was one of football’s most decorated players and coach of the Indigenous team of the century, from its hall of fame and stripped him of legend status after the findings were made in a Perth court last month.

On Monday, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) confirmed that after a special meeting it was deemed Cable’s actions were “contrary to the values of the organisation” and he was stripped of his status immediately.

Cable, 79, didn’t respond to a letter sent by the body, which remains the most prestigious sporting club for the nation’s elite athletes.

“Induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame is reserved for the best of the best,” the SAHOF statement said.

“Those who are inducted into this elite group have not only excelled in their chosen field but uphold the character traits of dignity, integrity, courage, modesty and pride.

“Cable’s actions are contrary to the values of the organisation, and as a result his SAHOF membership is revoked immediately.”

Cable was sued in the district court of Western Australia by a woman who alleged he abused her over a five-year period beginning in the 1960s when she was aged 12 or 13.

Judge Mark Herron found Cable had repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl during his playing career and also found there was compelling evidence he had also abused other children.
