Australian magistrate reacts to Nick Kyrgios’ win over Daniil Medvedev

An Australian magistrate could not contain their amazement after Nick Kyrgios scored an important victory against Daniil Medvedev.

News of Nick Kyrgios’ victory over Daniil Medvedev appears to have travelled fast from the tennis court to a local court.

An Australian magistrate interrupted a hearing to announce the feat, an Australian Associated Press journalist tweeted on Monday.

“Sorry to interrupt, it's just popped up on my phone that Nick Kyrgios has defeated the No. 1,” reporter Karen Sweeney quoted the magistrate as saying.

It wasn’t clear which magistrate made the comment or which case was at hand.

Sweeney, a Melbourne-based court reporter, declined to comment further when contacted.

However, responding to another Twitter user questioning whether the episode actually happened, Sweeney insisted it did and wrote that “weird and strange and unexpected stuff happens in courts”.

Kyrgios’ feat means the Aussie is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time.

Medvedev, a Russian who was considered the world’s top tennis player, could not stop Kyrgios from scoring a 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory.

The match took place at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York, on Sunday night, local time.

The 27-year-old Australian will now meet another Russian, Karen Khachanov, for a spot in the semi-finals.

Kyrgios is set to face a Canberra court in October on a charge of assault.

The offence carries a maximum jail sentence of two years.

He has not entered a plea.

Kyrgios was initially due to face the ACT Magistrates Court on August 2, but the hearing was postponed three weeks due to his competition schedule.
