Australian bowlers smashed to all parts in T20 loss in India
Local batsmen went berserk against the Australian bowlers including a World Cup hero who was smashed to all parts.
There was no golden touch for World Cup winner Glenn Maxwell in his cricketing return as the Australian star was smashed for 38 runs off just two overs as an understrength bowling outfit was hammered in a second-straight T20 loss in India.
Stand-in coach Andre Borevic lamented the lack of bowling “execution” as Sean Abbott also conceded a massive 56 runs from just three overs as the home team went to town and scored a convincing 44-run win in Thiruvananthapuram.
Star spinner Adam Zampa also returned to the team a week after hoisting the ODI World Cup trophy and showed no signs of a celebration hangover as he and fellow tweaker Tanveer Sangha did their best to keep the Indian batters in check.
But the local batters combined to whack 13 sixes and hit 19 fours in racking up a monster total of 235-4 after being sent in to bat by Australian skipper Matthew Wade.
In response, there were no batting heroics from the tourists who were undone by spinners Ravi Bishnoi and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who each took three wickets as the hosts kept Australia down to 191-9 and extend their lead to 2-0 in the five-match series.
“If you look at the bowling, there was a fine line with execution,” said Borevic, who is in charge of the team after coach Andrew McDonald returned home following the World Cup.
“We weren’t able to make inroads in the first six overs. In these conditions, the plans and intent is there and you don’t have to miss by an awful lot. We’re making the right decisions but aren’t executing in the right moments.”
Josh Inglis, who made a century in the opening game, was out for just two, Maxwell made just 12 and only a late flurry from Wade, who smashed an unbeaten 42 off just 23 balls, pushed Australia anywhere near the total.
There was still no sign of World Cup player-of-the final Travis Head, who has now missed the opening two games of the series following his heroics, and epic celebrations.
Tim David also whacked 37 and Marcus Stoinis hit 45 off 25 balls in an 81-run partnership. The pair hit six sixes between them.
Game three of the series is on Wednesday.
