Anthony Albanese meets with senior Donald Trump aides after meeting with US President falls through
The PM declined to confirm when he could next meet with US President Donald Trump, after a scheduled face-to-face was cancelled last minute.
Anthony Albanese has declined to confirm when a rescheduled meeting with Donald Trump would occur after a previously scheduled meeting with the US President was cancelled after he left the G7 Summit on Tuesday afternoon (AEST).
While both leaders are expected to attend the NATO Summit at The Hague from June 24-25, the Prime Minister, who is “considering” going, declined to confirm whether a locked-in meeting would occur then.
The rescheduled session, where Mr Albanese will put forward Australia’s fight to secure a tariff exemption, follows a meeting with Mr Trump’s senior trade advisors on Tuesday evening (AEST), which included Mr Trump’s principle economic advisory and the National Economic Council director Kevin Hasset, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Australia’s US ambassador Kevin Rudd also attended the meeting, and the group discussed trade, tariffs, critical minerals and rare earths.
While Mr Albanese has declined to say when the crucial meeting would occur, he remained optimistic.
“We’ll meet soon and I’m sure that will occur. From time to time meetings are rescheduled, that’s what happens,” he told reporters in Kananaskis while attending the G7.
“Those discussions have taken place over a period of time, and we’ll continue to engage.”
Despite locking in a face-to-face bilateral with Mr Trump for Tuesday afternoon (AEST), the US leader left the G7 Summit early to return to Washington following escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
A government spokesperson said the cancellation was understandable “given what is occurring in the Middle East”.
“As the Prime Minister said a short time ago, we are very concerned about the events in the Middle East and continue to urge all parties to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy,” they said.
