Annabel Sutherland named played of the tournament in The Hundred

She’s the future of Australian cricket and showed why teams are shelling out six-figure sums to get her involved.

When cricket returns to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 there’s a chance Annabel Sutherland could be Australian captain.

She franked her status as the national team’s next big thing by being named player of the tournament in The Hundred in the UK as former Australian captain Meg Lanning lifted the winner’s trophy.

Sutherland, 22, was picked up on a $95,000 deal by the Northern Superchargers, making 2024 a lucrative year having also earned a staggering $364,000 playing in the Women’s IPL earlier this year.

She was second most expensive Australian purchase ever in the fledgling competition and has become a hot commodity around the world.

In her seven games in The Hundred, Sutherland swatted 210 runs and snaffled 10 wickets. Only seven batters scored more runs across the tournament, and only that same number, seven, took more wickets.

Sutherland’s efforts weren’t enough to get her team into the final, which was won by Lanning’s London Spirit for the second season in a row.

Dispelling all fears she could be lost to the game after walking away from international cricket despite being only 31 at the time, Lanning is still making an impact, having also played in India where she was captain of the Delhi Capitals.

Australian batter Georgia Redmayne was named player of the match in the final at Lord’s and finished with the third most runs (219) in the tournament.

There was also Australian success in the men’s tournament, with spin star Adam Zampa taking 2-26 as his Oval Invincibles raced to the title.

Zampa, scheduled to play against England and Scotland in an upcoming white-ball tour of the UK, finished the tournament with the equal-most wickets, snaring 19 in his nine games for the London outfit.
