Allison Langdon prods ScoMo over borders, Queensland election

Today host Allison Langdon wasn’t having it when the Prime Minister said he was in Queensland just to spruik the Federal Budget.

Scott Morrison has been grilled over campaigning in Queensland less than three weeks before the state election.

The Prime Minister was speaking about last week’s Federal Budget on Today when he was asked if he could win the election for Liberal Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington.

“That is a matter for Deb Frecklington and the people of Queensland, I mean, I’m here talking about the Budget we’ve had.

“It’s a budget to get people back into jobs and get Queenslanders working again.”

But host Allison Langdon wasn’t having it.

“Come on … you happen to be there two weeks before the state election, it’s good timing,” she said.

“I’m happy to be here with Deb Frecklington, she has a plan to get Queenslanders working again,” Mr Morrison said.

But Langdon said she couldn’t believe Queensland allowed the Prime Minister in, prompting laughter.

“No special rules for me, nor should there be for anyone,” Mr Morrison said.

“I understand Queenslanders are very supportive of the border arrangements they have here.

“While they have played a role they also come at a cost here in Queensland.

“The bounce back from the COVID recession hasn’t been as strong as in other states and territories – 44 per cent of jobs have come back here compared with 70 per cent in NSW and 70 per cent in South Australia.

However, he conceded that if Ms Frecklington won the election, reopening the borders would still be based on the health advice.

“Come on, Prime Minister” Ms Langdon said.

“They have to make the calls based on health advice,” Mr Morrison said.

“I’m not looking to get into an argument about this at all.

“On a couple of occasions I raised specific cases which … were raised with me and sought compassion.

“On both those occasions we eventually got a better outcome.

“That was about trying to help people.”
