Adelaide disability worker charged with careless driving causing death after fatal crash

A disability support worker has been charged following a crash that resulted in the death of a wheelchair-bound passenger.

A disability worker has been charged with dangerous driving following a crash which that killed a woman in a wheelchair.

The passenger who lost her life was a 59-year-old woman from Davoren Park in Adelaide’s north.

The crash happened about an hour’s drive south of Adelaide on Sunday.

The 20-year-old female driver has been charged with causing death by careless use of a motor vehicle and causing injury by careless use of a motor vehicle. She was bailed and expected to reappear in court in November.

Both the female driver and another disability sector worker were injured in the crash.

“Both staff were injured and have since been discharged,” their employer, Care Assure, said in a statement.

“A much loved participant was severely injured and passed away from their injuries at Victor Harbor Hospital shortly thereafter.

“Care Assure’s thoughts and prayers are with the participant, the family of the participant, our injured staff, their families and everyone involved.

“We wish to reassure you that the safety and care of our participants and staff is of utmost priority to us. We are working with the relevant agencies to investigate and assist in this matter.”

South Australian police say the Toyota van hit a tree at an intersection on a highway at the town of Hayborough about 4.30pm on Sunday.
