The boy was a passenger on an e-bike being ridden by his father, 46, when a Honda Odyssey ran into them at the Robina Town Centre about 6.11pm on Wednesday.

The father and son were rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

The 47-year-old man driving the Honda was also take to hospital in a stable condition for assessment.

The boy died in hospital on Thursday.

“It’s very tragic. Given the circumstances they were no doubt out enjoying some family time together and this tragedy has struck their family,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.

“This is certainly a tragic situation, tragic circumstances.

“It will be up to the investigators to determine whether that tragedy was as a result of inappropriate driving behaviours, or mechanical issues, or what actually led to this situation.”

Witnesses have been asked to contact police, particularly people with vision.

Investigations are continuing.
