Australia’s love for Tina Turner is about to run even deeper with the smash hit Tina – The Tina Turner Musical coming to one of the country’s most iconic theatres.

In May 23, the Theatre Royal Sydney in the city’s CBD will welcome audiences into its newly refurbished auditorium to see the musical that broke box-office records following its world premiere in 2018 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including best musical, in 2019.

Produced by entertainment company TEG Dainty in collaboration with Stage Entertainment, Tali Pelman and Tina Turner, the musical reveals the comeback story of a woman who defied the bounds of her age, gender and race to become the queen of Rock n’ Roll.

Paul Dainty, the president and chief executive of TEG Dainty, said when he first heard about the show almost a decade ago, he was “hooked on the idea of it” despite there being no script or book.

“I was actually on tour and I heard a whisper about this show being put together so I literally jumped on the phone to my contacts overseas and got onto it,” Dainty said. “And here we are on a journey with her [Turner] for seven years to finally bring the Australian premiere about in Sydney next year.”

Dainty said the Theatre Royal mirrored the theatre the musical was playing out of in London, which “lends itself very much to delivering a great experience in that venue.”

“It was the iconic theatre for many years which recently reopened with a big refurbishment,” he said. “It is the venue we all remember having incredible hit shows in there in the years gone by.”

Of the show itself, Dainty said audiences can expect to laugh, cry and sing Turner’s biggest hits.

“The musical is such an emotional story … and woven into that amazing story of a teenager’s life and how she got to where she ended up being are 23 incredible songs that everyone knows,” he said.

“That’s quite unique to get in a stage musical.”

The first round of auditions have already taken place to secure the show’s Australian cast. Dainty said Turner is across the entire process, being deeply involved in the initial planning and what story was scripted.

“She’s been involved in all the creative steps to bring the show to the stage,” he said.

The 12-time Grammy Award winner said she can’t wait to be reunited with Australia once more.

“Australia has always shared abundant love with me, going back to my early concerts in the late 70s through the uplifting partnership with the National Rugby League. It is very special for me that we will be reunited,” Turner said.

“The joy, passion and message of resilience in my musical is as important now as ever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me with opening arms once again.”
