Streaming giant Netflix has once again won bragging rights after two of its TV shows dominated the Emmys 2021 list of nominations.

British royal drama The Crown and Star Wars show The Mandalorian saw the nominations pile up, with each show getting 24 nods across the drama categories.

Marvel’s WandaVision came in second, scoring the most limited series nominations with 23, while comedy Ted Lasso received 20.

The chances of Australia taking home a trophy were dashed significantly when Joel Edgerton and Nicole Kidman missed out for their respective roles in The Underground Railroad and The Undoing.

National pride was redeemed by Yvonne Strahovski being nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for The Handmaid’s Tale. This is the second time Strahovski has been recognised at the coveted awards.

Kidman’s performance in The Undoing was recognised at both the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier in 2021, setting her as a frontrunner to take out the best actress in a limited series category. Instead, I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel, WandaVision’s Elizabeth Olsen, Genius: Aretha’s leading lady Cynthia Erivo, The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy and Mare of Easttown star Kate Winslet were the nominees.

Taylor-Joy has already been crowned best actress at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards but she has stiff competition in acting legend Winslet and the talented Coel, who wrote, produced, co-directed and created the drama series.

Kidman co-star Hugh Grant was nominated in the best actor category, alongside Paul Bettany for WandaVision, Ewan McGregor for Halston, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr, both starring in Hamilton.

WandaVison supporting star Kathryn Hahn also received a nomination.

After a major snub at the Golden Globes, Netflix’s hit period drama Bridgerton secured 12 nominations, one for the show’s breakout star Regé-Jean Page for best actor in a drama series.

Other categories for which the drama was recognised include best drama series, best period costumes, and best music composition.

For comedy, Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, about an American football coach tasked with handling a soccer team in England, scored 20 nominations, including for best comedy and best comedy actor for Jason Sudeikis.

The 73rd Emmy Awards will be presented at a live, in-person ceremony in Los Angeles, broadcast on September 20 Australian time.
