Sinead O’Connor, Cher, and Mariah Carey are Rock Hall nominees
There’s faint hope for Britpop heads that the long-beefing brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher may share the stage once more if Oasis finds itself inducted
Sinead O’Connor, Sade, Cher, Mariah Carey, Ozzy Osbourne, and Oasis lead the charge as first-time nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024.
Other names on the short list are Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, and Lenny Kravitz, appearing alongside previously nominated acts such as Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige, Jane’s Addiction, A Tribe Called Quest, and Eric B. & Rakim.
This is the first time that Osbourne, who is already an inductee of the Rock Hall as a member of the Birmingham metal progenitor’s Black Sabbath, has been recognized for his solo work.
It also includes a posthumous nomination for O’Connor, the outspoken Irish singer-songwriter who died in July at the age of 56.
There’s faint hope for Britpop heads that long-beefing brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher may share the stage once more should Oasis find themselves inducted. Musicians are eligible for induction into the Rock Hall 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording.
“This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” John Sykes, the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. “Continuing in the true spirit of rock ’n’ roll, these artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”
This marks the first unveiling of nominees since the ousting of Jann Wenner, the Rolling Stone editor, and co-founder of the Rock Hall.
Wenner was sacked in September last year, one day after the publication of an interview he gave to the New York Times while promoting his book, “The Masters,” which compiles archival interviews from the ‘60s, ’70s, and ’80s, and exclusively features white male musicians such as John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Mick Jagger.
When asked, in the interview, to justify the subjects for his interview collection, Wenner said that female artists like Joni Mitchell, he said, were not “philosophers of rock,” and Black performers like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye “just didn’t articulate at that level.”
Last year saw Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine, Willie Nelson, George Michael, and the Spinners inducted into the Rock Hall class of 2023.
