Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett have missed out on a gong at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Hollywood, dashing the nation’s hopes for a homegrown star to take home a trophy.

They were competing against each other in the Best Actress in a Limited Series category, after Kidman was nominated for her role in The Undoing and Blanchett for Mrs America — but both were beaten by Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy.

Taylor-Joy, who rose to prominence as the red-haired orphaned chess prodigy who goes on to become a grand master, accepted the award in a virtual ceremony, with stars tuning in from their homes around the world.

“I’m so unbelievably honoured to be in this room, even though it’s not a room, it’s all mental — but you know what I mean,” the star gushed to laughs.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 was judged the year’s Best Cast in a Motion Picture — a verdict that strengthens the film’s case for the Oscars later this month, for which the SAG awards have long been considered a stop on the road.

The movie tells the harrowing true story of the trial of a group of American political activists who were charged with inciting a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It stars Eddie Redmayne, Jeremy Strong, Michael Keaton and honorary Australian Sacha Baron Cohen, who has now made his home in Sydney with his actress wife Isla Fisher.

Australian Belinda Bromilow, who was nominated with the rest of the cast of The Great under the Ensemble in a Comedy category, also missed out as the mega-hit Schitt’s Creek took the crown.

Schitt’s Creek’s Catherine O’Hara also took out Best Actress in a Comedy Series, while Jason Sudeikis took home the award for the men’s category for his role in Ted Lasso.

Jason Bateman won Best Actor in a Drama Series for Ozark and Gillian Anderson won the female category for her turn as Margaret Thatcher in the Crown.

Mark Ruffalo won the Best Male Actor in a Limited Series category for his role in the twin drama I Know This Much Is True.

South Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung stole the show with her emotional acceptance speech after she won a Best Supporting Actress gong for her role in Minari, for which she is also nominated for an Oscar. “I don’t know how to describe my feelings to have (them) recognised by Westerners,” a shocked Yuh-jung said.

Chadwick Boseman, who died last year after a private battle with colon cancer, was posthumously honoured with a Best Leading Actor award for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with Viola Davis winning the Best Actress category of the same award.
