Have you heard the term “vegan leather”? It’s one feature of the Find X2 Pro, a 5G flagship by popular brand Oppo that has gone decidedly up-market.

Just as vegan burgers don’t have real meat, vegan leather simply means fake leather. Nevertheless, the orange vegan leather back finish looks stellar, whatever it’s called. Alternatively, there’s “ceramic black”.

You get a very high-resolution quadHD display with stunning quality.

The screen has a fast 120 Hertz refresh rate, which is great for faster-action mobile gaming.

The phone has a triple lens camera system: a 48MP wide-angle lens, 48MP ultra-wide lens and 13MP telephoto lens. These triple lens systems are popular because they let you cram lots of detail into shots, and also zoom in for close-ups.

This phone has a 10X hybrid zoom, which is conservative compared with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, which has 100X zoom. But the 100X zoom quality isn’t there.

The camera has a large f/1.7 aperture so you can shoot in low light. You can shoot 12-bit RAW images and 4K video at a fast 60 frames per second. Oppo says the ultra-wide and wide-angle lenses support image stabilisation.

The Find X2 Pro uses Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 865 mobile 5G platform, released in December. Qualcomm says some 1750 phones and other devices are slated to use this platform. Oppo says the phone supports dual-mode 5G and a strong 5G + 4G global roaming capability.

It has a very large battery, fast charging, dual speakers and support for Dolby ATMOS.

But there’s no microSD card support, no 3.5mm audio jack and a big price tag: $1599. It pits the phone against the top-end Apple and Samsung devices.

Oppo made its name offering great features for about half the price of Apple and Samsung phones.

How consumers warm to Oppo as a top-end brand remains to be seen.
