While performing on one of the biggest stages in global pop music at the weekend, Australian hip-hop artist The Kid Laroi took a few moments to heap praise upon Justin Bieber, with whom he co-wrote a monstrous hit.
At the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the Californian desert, the Sydney-raised performer known as Charlton Howard said “Justin – thank you for changing my f..king life, bro”.
“You’re such a special f..king human being,” said Howard, 19, before a thousands-strong crowd. “I love you and I’ve got you forever, bro. Thank you for being not only an incredible musician and collaborator, but thank you for being my f..king friend, man.”
Backed by a drummer, guitarist and DJ, The Kid Laroi then launched into Stay, his two-minute track with Bieber that has remained one of the world’s most popular songs since its release in July 2021. It topped the chart in 21 countries including Australia, and has amassed more than 2.5 billion streams on Spotify alone.
Canadian pop star Bieber was spotted dancing in the crowd at Coachella with his wife, Hailey. In March, the 29-year-old announced he was cancelling a tour of Australian stadiums because of health issues; in June last year, Bieber shared his diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which causes facial paralysis.
The Kid Laroi, meanwhile, has swiftly become one of the most popular Australian artists in the world.
After his highly successful arena tour in his homeland last year, the Coachella performance is a precursor to the Kid’s hotly anticipated debut album, said to be titled The First Time, the release date of which is unknown; the entire festival line-up is booked to reappear next weekend, with about 125,000 people attending each day.
Other Australian acts performing at Coachella include Melbourne quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, Gold Coast DJ Fisher and electronic artist Alison Wonderland, who performed as Whyte Fang while eight months pregnant.
