Taylor Swift in Australia: The MCG show detail that has American Swifties baffled as the singer touches down in Sydney

Doing absolutely no favours to their international reputation, Americans have swarmed social media posts of Taylor Swift’s Melbourne concerts confused by a very obvious detail.

Taylor Swift fans in America couldn’t figure out how fans got to the MCG for her Australian shows given the lack of carparks around the venue.

As Swifties around the world track every movement of their idol while she graces Australia’s east coast, Taylor Swift’s American fans were left baffled by a seemingly innocuous detail of her shows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Swift rocked the MCG over three consecutive nights last week, playing for a combined audience of nearly 300,000.

Aerial images of the iconic sporting colosseum in the heart of the Victorian capital went viral worldwide, as it was the largest crowd the planet’s biggest artist has played in front of – but that wasn’t the specific which grabbed her US audience.

Thousands of American commenters have flooded posts showing the MCG from the sky asking where the car park was located, baffled at the possibility of any other way of attending an event.

“Silly question, but where did everyone park?” one fan asked.

“Are there even enough parking spots? How does this stadium work? Does the parking surround the stadium?” another deeply confused American fan commented.

“Me looking for all the vehicles people took to get there but can’t find any. Like how?” another asked.

The majority of the biggest stadiums in the US are American football arenas, both college and NFL, and are usually located either on the outskirts of town or often a significant drive away from the cities they represent.

MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets, is actually located in a desolate area of New Jersey.

The New England Patriots, Boston’s NFL team, play their games at Foxborough, 50km southwest off the city’s downtown precinct.

Super Bowl runners up the San Francisco 49ers play their games at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, nearly an hour drive by car from the city.

The lack of proximity to these major stadiums, the unavailability of public transport to these largely unpopulated areas and the tailgating tradition (drinking and barbecuing before the game) of American sport means the vast majority of the country’s largest venues require significant parking.

The MCG, however, is a short walk from Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station, as well as several others including Richmond and Jolimont. Trams and buses also run to the ground, with very limited parking available.

Swift’s upcoming four Sydney shows will be held at Accor Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park, another venue best accessed by public transport. However, there are several parking garages for those willing to brave the traffic and the cost.

The aerial shots won’t show these though, so prepare yourself for more American confusion.
