Change at the top for Melbourne Symphony Orchesta
Sophie Galaise is leaving the Queensland Symphony Orchestra to become managing director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Canadian orchestra manager Sophie Galaise is leaving the Queensland Symphony Orchestra after three years to become managing director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Galaise, a flautist and musicologist, was manager of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra before starting in Brisbane in June 2013. The MSO has emerged from several difficult years associated with the refurbishment of Hamer Hall, and chairman Michael Ullmer says Galaise is the “right person to build on this momentum”.
She comes to the MSO after a quick succession of managers from American Matthew VanBesien (2010-2012), Canadian Andre Gremillet (2012-15) and interim manager Richard Evans, who has joined the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Galaise has a five-year contract with the MSO, and says she is looking forward to working with chief conductor Sir Andrew Davis, the musicians, and the wider orchestra community. “That’s the secret to delivering good financial and artistic outcomes,” she says.
