Meghan Markle suits up for swansong
Pick of the day: Suits, 8.30pm, Universal.
Let’s be frank: there will be many, many people watching Suits for the first time to catch a glimpse of Meghan Markle, the actress and soon-to-be British royal, and not because it is in the vanguard of the golden age of television.
The cheesy legal drama returns tonight after a hiatus with the second half of season seven, which will be Markle’s last. (The show has been renewed for an eighth season.) The story has revolved around lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht); his protege, who has faked his law degree, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams); and Ross’s on-again, off-again love interest, Rachel Zane (Markle).
Markle, perhaps foreshadowing her new public role, has described these final episodes in a wholly anodyne and uncontroversial fashion. “Season seven is an exciting one for Rachel because I think we’ve seen so much growth in her in the past six seasons. Her relationship has progressed, her role in the firm is in a much stronger place, so we see her at this juncture really trying to juggle everything as she has in the past but with even more pressure,” she says.
“I’m just so excited that after seven years in our fans are still so invested in being on this journey with us. It’s amazing.”
(On second thoughts, the talk of “her role in the firm” and “relationships progressing” ought to cause a knowing chuckle.)
In these remaining episodes, Specter deals with the aftermath of Jessica (Gina Torres) losing her licence, while trying to process the guilt of kissing Donna (Sarah Rafferty) despite his relationship with Paula (Christina Cole). Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) struggles with ethical dilemmas as his affair with Sheila (Rachael Harris) deepens. And Ross tries to juggle his commitment to the firm, his passion for pro bono work and his engagement to Rachel.
If Suits is not your cup of tea, the Superman prequel series Krypton premieres tonight at 7.30pm on SyFy.
