Everything Everywhere All at Once sweeps the SAG Awards

Cate Blanchett was snubbed in the best lead female actor category, for her role in Tar.

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once swept four of its five nominations at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award.

The film took home best ensemble cast, with Michelle Yeoh winning best female actor, and Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis winning for best supporting actor.

Yeoh beat out Australian star Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler for the best female actor gong.

The SAG Awards are a reliable bellwether for how The Oscars race will play out — with the top winners at last year’s SAG ceremony corresponding exactly with the Academy Awards winners.

Blanchett has won both a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her performance as a tyrannical composer/conductor in Todd Field’s Tar, which The Australian’s David Stratton called “hugely ambitious and impressive.”

“This is not just for me, but for all of the little girls like me,” Yeoh said during her acceptance speech. “Thank you for giving me a seat at the table, because so many of us need this — we want to be seen, we want to be heard. And tonight, you have shown us that it is possible.”

A tearful Quan noted that he is the first Asian actor to ever win in the category of best supporting actor. “When I heard this, I quickly realised that this moment no longer belongs to just me. It also belongs to everyone who has asked for change,” he said.

Jamie Lee Curtis winked at the “nepo baby” discourse sparked by a December New York Magazine cover story. “My parents were actors, I’m married to an actor — I love actors,” she said, adding “I know you look at me and think, ‘Well, nepo baby, that’s why she’s there.’ I totally get it. But the truth of the matter is I’m 64 years old, and this is just amazing.”

Brendan Fraser, who is tipped to win at The Oscars for his performance as a morbidly obese English tutor in The Whale, took out the best lead actor trophy. Fraser, who boycotted the Golden Globes ceremony after claiming he was sexually assaulted by a former HFPA president, said during his speech that “I never would have believed that I would have been offered the role of my life in this character.”

Reflecting on the career renaissance he has experienced after starring in the Darren Aronofsky film, Fraser added, “I just want you to know for real, all the actors out there who have gone through that — who are going through that — I know how you feel. But believe me, if you just stay in there and you put one foot in front of the other, you’ll get to where you need to go.”

Fraser beat out Colin Farrell, Bill Nighy, Adam Sandler and Austin Butler for the trophy. It was the only category that Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy biopic, ELVIS, was recognised.

Mike White’s The White Lotus won best drama ensemble. F. Murray Abraham accepted the award on behalf of the cast, he called the series “the best job I’ve ever had,” and used his speech to express support for the earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey, and wish for peace in Ukraine.

The shows star Jennifer Coolidge considered her victory streak, picking up the award for best female actor in a drama series. “The best gift you can give someone is to change someone’s perspective for the better, and that’s what Mike White did for me,” she said.

Both Jason Bateman and Jessica Chastain won their third SAG gongs, for Ozark and George and Tammy, respectively.

Sally Field was given the acting union’s highest honour: the Life Achievement Award. The award was presented to her by her The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Andrew Garfield, who spoke about how Field broke ground for female actors in the male-dominated industry, noting Field’s lifelong dedication to fighting for women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights. “Sally, you show us how to live a life devoted to art, love and service,” he said.

During her acceptance speech, Field reflected that climbing her way out of the sitcom box in the ‘60s and ‘70s “took a fierceness I didn’t know I had.”

She acknowledged how difficult it was coming up as a young woman in the film industry, and how that plight is more challenging for actors of colour. “My fight, as hard as it was, was lightweight compared to some of yours,” she said, before saying, “easy is overrated.”

Despite tying with Everything All At Once for the most nominations of the evening, Martin McDonagh’s bleak Irish comedy The Banshees of Inisherin was snubbed in all categories.
