Australia leads the charge as 2023 Emmy nominations announced
The final season of Succession dominated with 27 nods, but an ongoing writers’ strike and potential actors’ strike are casting doubt over the event itself | FULL LIST
The 75th Emmy Awards are poised to be Australia’s greatest yet, with stars Sarah Snook, Murray Bartlett, and Anna Torv all vying for glory in major drama categories.
As expected, and deservedly so, the blistering final season of Succession dominated this year‘s pool with 27 nominations — the show’s biggest haul to date. The peerless HBO media dynasty drama received 14 acting nominations, including a lead drama actress nomination for Adelaide’s Sarah Snook. Snook portrayed the sly and savvy Shiv, the family’s only daughter and liberal, for four seasons.
This is the third time Snook has competed in the best drama actress category, which she has never won. Although the competition is hot — she will compete against the likes of Sharon Horgan for Bad Sisters, Melanie Lynskey for Yellowjackets, and Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid‘s Tale — if the academy has any interest in correcting its historic wrongs, she will come out the winner.
Succession‘s patriarch Brian Cox, along with the dysfunctional brothers Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, all secured nominations for best lead drama actor, making Emmy history in the process. This marks the first time that the lead actor category has seen three actors from the same series.
The Last of Us, HBO‘s lavish $100 million zombie video game adaptation, emerged as the second most-nominated show of the night, with 23. Among those were nominations for Australia’s Murray Bartlett and first-time nominee Anna Torv, who are both up for best guest actor in a drama
Bartlett clinched his first Emmy last year for best supporting actor in a limited series for his role as a tortured hotelier in The White Lotus. He has once again been nominated in that category and is favoured to win for his scene-stealing performance in Welcome to the Chippendales.
HBO had one of its strongest years to date, accumulating a total of 127 nominations — the most of any network. Three of its shows were the most nominated: Succession (27), The Last of Us (24), and The White Lotus (23). Netflix finished second with 103 nominations.
The network swept the best supporting actor in a drama category with eight out of eight, split between performers from Succession and The White Lotus, including surprising but delightful nods for Sabrina Impacciatore and Simona Tabasco.
There were, of course, snubs. Despite the popularity of creator Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and its Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren-led prequel 1923, the franchise was all but shut-out of this year’s awards. Also, FX’s weirdo vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows — a spin-off of New Zealand director Taika Waititi’s 2014 film — received four nominations in technical categories but failed to notch a nomination for best comedy series.
In the technical categories, Australian composer Allyson Newman, a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, received a nomination for her work on the series The L World: Generation Q in the outstanding music and lyrics category.
Australian director Kim Gehrig is nominated in the Outstanding Commercial category for her work on the Apple commercial The Greatest. Fletcher Moules, another Australian director and producer, is nominated as one of the producers of the animated music special Entergalactic, created by rapper Kid Cudi.
Though the Emmy nomination day is usually cause for celebration, nominees accepted their achievements solemnly amid the ongoing writer‘s strike and looming SAG-AFTRA’s actor’s strike. More than 11,000 television and feature film writers have been on the picket line for 72 days.
Craig Mazin, the writer of The Last of Us, was one of the many honorees to address the turmoil in their statements post-nomination. “My priority right now is to see the day when all entertainment industry artists and craftspeople are treated fairly by the companies who convert our work into their profits,” he wrote.
The 75th-anniversary ceremony of this year’s Emmys is scheduled to occur on September 18th. However, the strikes have cast uncertainty over the event. According to reports, the timing of the ceremony hinges on resolution reached by the guilds.
