RNC 2016: Day 4 - Donald Trump promises to restore order

Here are some of the more memorable quotes from Trump's speech, which went for more than an hour and was described by a former speechwriter to George H.W. Bush as "very dark and frightening".

• "Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens."

• "Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo."
• "Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it."
• "When I take the oath of office next year, I will restore law and order to our country."
• "We must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism until such time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put in place."
• "We are going to build a great border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities."
• "Hillary Clinton is proposing...mass lawlessness."
• "My pledge reads, "I'm with you: the American people."

As the balloons fell at the Republican National Convention, and the US got a taste of the man who could be President, the current occupant of the White House hosted a reception for Muslims.

Barack Obama said Americans should "answer those who would peddle hate or suggest that somehow their interpretations of their faith justify violence".

The dignitaries later chanted "four more years", a call for Obama to remain in office for another term.

Donald Trump's speech is "a compendium of doomsday statistics that fall apart upon close scrutiny", according to journalists who have fact-checked it.

In the areas of immigration, crime and the economy, data was manipulated or taken out of context, an analysis of the comments found.

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, who endorsed Donald Trump as his "white knight" in May, also enjoyed the speech.

"Couldn't have said it better," Duke wrote on Twitter.

One theme has emerged from the analysis of Trump's speech: it kind of made him sound like a dictator.

Former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was one of the first out of the gate.

He was joined by Democrat senator Elizabeth Warren, and commentator Chris Kluwe who called Trump "this generation's Hitler".

Well look who couldn't help himself: Jon Stewart has made a brief return to a late night show tonight to riff on Trump's speech and the whole week of the RNC. His former colleague Stephen Colbert (who now hosts the The Late Show on CBS) gave up his desk for ten minutes to let Stewart do his thing:

Not everyone was disturbed though, the Murdoch-owned New York Post is calling it "an inspiring manifesto for our times."

Much of the post-speech commentary in the media so far seems to be surprise at just how dark it was, describing an America gripped by chaos and lawlessness.

"Apocalyptic" one news anchor just called it.

"I had no idea we lived in Gotham city," Republican consultant Mike Murphy just joked on MSNBC.

Jennifer Rubin at the Washington Post has just written: 'Donald Trump accepted the nomination of the Republican Party for president by appealing to, and fanning the flames of fear and resentment. It was notable for a presidential convention acceptance speech that it had so little hope, vision, or concrete examples of how Trump would advance his agenda and "Make America Great Again".'

It's almost midnight in the US, Trump's speech went well beyond prime time, will be interesting to know how many TV viewers stuck around for the whole thing. It seems his youngest son at least had trouble staying awake.

Hillary Clinton's campaign team has been busy tonight through out Trump's speech, responding in real time to some of the claims and comments on Twitter, something not possible in previous cycles.
