Sydney Morning Herald, The Age journalists win key IT awards

By Staff reporter

The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald have been recognised for their leading coverage of the technology sector with reporters David Swan and Tim Biggs taking home several of the 2024 Journalism IT Awards’ most prestigious titles.

Announced at an awards ceremony in Sydney on Friday, technology editor Swan was awarded the highest title of best journalist overall, known as the “Gold Lizzy”, best telecommunications journalist, and best cybersecurity journalist. He was highly commended for the best technology issues category.

Swan’s accolades recognised his exclusive reporting on TikTok that revealed it was harvesting Australians’ private data without consent, his coverage of cyberattacks that stole data from St Vincent’s Hospital, and the inner chaos of Optus during its national outage late last year.

Biggs’ coverage broke down how new developments from the world’s largest tech companies affected people’s everyday lives, which saw The Age and The Herald awarded the title of best consumer technology coverage.

Biggs’ stories shone a light on how those at risk of speech loss were a surprising beneficiary of Apple’s new accessibility features, explained how Microsoft was introducing generative AI within the Office suite, and revealed secrets inside the non-Pro version of the iPhone 14.

“These awards are fitting recognition of the industry-leading journalism our IT and tech reporters regularly produce at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age,” said National Editor David King.

“From strong news exclusives to the latest product reviews, our team works hard every day to deliver for our audiences.”

Swan said he was thrilled the team’s journalism had been recognised as best in class. “In an era of AI and social media misinformation, it’s more important than ever to produce thoughtful, probing journalism people can trust,” he said.

Biggs said he was pleased to be recognised in a competitive field alongside other reporters and outlets that focused exclusively on technology.

“It’s especially gratifying to win in the consumer tech space where a lot of our work goes into making sure we have the important issues covered for a general audience, and stay entertaining, but are rigorous and extensive enough for the tech heads,” Biggs said.
