‘You’re taking us down’: Postecoglou involved in heated confrontation with Tottenham fan

Ange Postecoglou was involved in another heated exchange with a Tottenham fan as he walked down the tunnel following the 2-1 defeat by Leicester City on Sunday.

The Tottenham head coach was shepherded away by one of his backroom staff after receiving abuse from an apparent Spurs supporter, who accused the Australian of getting the club relegated this season.

This was the third time that Postecoglou has been involved in tense exchanges with supporters in recent months. Fans were once again incandescent as the team slipped to a 13th league defeat and his critics gathered towards the side of the player exit to make their feelings known.

Postecoglou initially ignored attacks as he walked down the tunnel, but then stopped in his tracks before walking back to look for one supporter who was heard screaming: “You’re taking us down, we’re going down with you.”

Postecoglou did not respond verbally but delivered a death stare before being ushered away by his backroom staff. It was just the latest in a series of tense scenes between the manager and supporters. Last month Postecoglou had been guided away from visiting fans following a heated clash of words after a 1-0 loss at Bournemouth.

Second-half goals from Jamie Vardy and Bilal El Khannouss secured a first win in nine league games for Leicester and piled more pressure on to the shoulders of Postecoglou.

The Australian admitted afterwards that he is in the dark about his future, describing the result as his lowest point of the season. Postecoglou said that some of Tottenham’s key players should return from injury in the next 10 days to two weeks. But asked if he will still be in charge then, he said: “Who knows? I reckon there is probably a fair chunk that will say no.

“When you are the manager of a football club, you can be very vulnerable and isolated. I don’t feel that. I feel like this group of players, not for me, are giving everything for the club.

“I have a group of staff that is really committed. I focus on that. My role within that is to try to support these players.

“As I keep saying to the players, there is a fantastic opportunity this season to really make an impact and I know we can. But in terms of your question, is there anything I can say about that that is going to change anything that I need to do tomorrow morning? Nothing.”

Tottenham are 15th in the league, but are still in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League, and Postecoglou added: “I really believe that this is as low as we’ve been so far this year, but I still think that in these last three months we can do something really special and these players believe that.”

Tottenham’s supporters have directed most of their anger at chairman Daniel Levy.
