Ange furious with Werner’s performance

Ange Postecoglou criticised Timo Werner’s performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League 1-1 draw with Rangers as “unacceptable”.

Werner was replaced by goalscorer Dejan Kulusevski at half-time, following a miserable first 45 minutes that made Postecoglou furious.

“He wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he should,” said Postecoglou. “When you’ve got 18-year-olds [on the pitch], it’s not acceptable to me.

“I said that to Timo. He’s a senior international, he’s a German international. In the moment we’re in right now, it’s not like we’ve got many options. I need everyone to at least be going out there trying to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable.”

Werner is on loan at Tottenham from RB Leipzig and has been criticised for his performances by the club’s fans. Asked how Werner responded to the brutal assessment on Friday morning (AEDT), Postecoglou said: “[I] don’t really know. It’s not really of great concern.

“We need everybody including him to be contributing. Because we don’t have the depth to leave people out if they’re performing poorly. We need them to play their part. Especially the senior guys. When I’m asking younger guys to do massive jobs, I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys. And today wasn’t that.”

Kulusevski’s goal rescued a draw for Tottenham, who had fallen behind against Rangers and were indebted to goalkeeper Fraser Forster for a brilliant late save.

Postecoglou said: “We were not anywhere near our best, but in a period of games we’re grinding through with a depleted squad, asking players to get up week in, week out. In the context of that, it’s a good outcome.

“The subs made a difference and scored a good goal. A great save by Fraser gives us an important point. It is the result, what’s fair and unfair is for others to judge.”

Thanks and goodbye

That’ll be it from me this morning on the live blog. Thanks for following along.

Disaster dodged by Tottenham Hotspur in Glasgow but another huge one is coming up for Ange Postecoglou on Monday morning. That feels like a really pivotal match in terms of the pressure building on him and the general mood around the club.

Most fans are still in his corner. For now.

Cheers, and have a great day.

Tottenham’s hero speaks

That’s Dejan Kulusevski, mind you. Not Ange Postecoglou. Not today.

“We’ve got to start winning games,” he just told TNT Sports.

We haven’t won in a couple of weeks so it is time to win on Sunday. Everyone needs to do a little bit more than we’re doing right now. Great support from the fans, but as I said, we have to win on Sunday.

Postecoglou and Clement post-match

They never faced off against each other in Scotland - Ange was gone from Celtic by the time Clement started the job - but here they are together after the game.

Here’s the full-time stats

FULL-TIME: Rangers 1-1 Tottenham

And that’s it.

A good point for Rangers. Crisis averted for Tottenham Hotspur but that’s not a result that will satisfy the critics of Ange Postecoglou, who are growing both in number and ferocity.

They lacked… something for the first hour of that match. Energy? Creativity? Poise? Confidence? What was it, exactly? All of those things? Maybe. But the introduction of Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke - and Lucas Bervgall, I should add - certainly made them look much better.

Attention now shifts to Monday morning’s (6am) clash away to Southampton. That’s a must-win. But every match is for Spurs right now, it feels like.

Solanke has a header saved

Dominic Solanke and James Maddison nearly linked up for the winner for Tottenham! Unfortunately Solanke couldn’t get enough header onto Maddison’s cross and it’s easily saved.

Three minutes of added time to come...

Rangers 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur, 90 minutes

FORSTER SAVES THE DAY

Oh wow. Wow wow wow. Cyrial Dessers beats his man and goes one-on-one with Fraser Forster and he looked certain to put Rangers back in the lead… but Forster gets a hand to it, somehow, and it’s out for a corner.

That’s cleared… and now they do have the ball in the back of the net! It’s Dessers! But this time it’s the offside flag that comes to Tottenham’s rescue!

All of a sudden it’s Rangers who are finishing the much better side. This is so tense...

Rangers 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur, 87 minutes

What an important goal that is

Huge goal for Ange Postecoglou. Still won’t be an imminent risk of the sack, in my view, if Spurs were to lose this - but the calls for him to go would certainly get much louder. But now it’s 1-1 and a different story. Tottenham definitely appears to be the more likely team to win it from here as Rangers seemingly had put the cue in the rack.

They’ve got a corner, Spurs… a foul is spotted in the box so the danger is clear for Rangers. For now.

GOAL! SPURS ARE LEVEL!

That’s more like it.

Cracking move from start to finish by Spurs who were stroking the ball around at the back, looking for an opening… and they found one.

It’s finished by the guy who had a big hand in starting it on the right-hand side, Dejan Kulusevski, who received Dominic Solanke’s cutback ball and finished brilliantly.

Wonderful stuff.
