Brisbane have caused the first boilover of the season, beating premiers Penrith 13-12.

It’s the Broncos’ first win at Penrith since 2009 and Kevin Walters’ first triumph over the Panthers in his fourth attempt as coach.

Jarome Luai looked certain to score as he jinked through the defence but a last-ditch Billy Walters tackle grassed him just before the line.

Try denied

Stephen Crichton zigs and zags into space but his wobbly pass to his winger travelled forward on the bounce to Brian To’o, who dives over but is then upset when he turns around to see the referee ruling no try.

Lost in transmission

Panthers clunky, Broncos gritty

Penrth’s normally slick attacking machine is looking decidedly clunky with plenty of players getting the ball flat-footed.

Brisbane have still been tested a lot in defence but they’ve kept turning up, getting bodies in the way close to the line.
