Australia had not hosted an Olympic Games before Melbourne. Australian had not had a home gold medallist - until Betty Cuthbert streamed down the brick-red cinder track on the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win the 100 metres.
Unknown a few months earlier, the Sydney teen went on to win the 200 and anchor the 4 x 100 metres relay to take three gold medals and become the face of the 1956 Games.
