Emergency eye surgery for prison guard hit with rock in Townsville riot
Updated first published at
A youth detention centre guard who fears he may lose sight in one eye after being hit by a rock during last week's riot in Townsville underwent surgery overnight to reattach his retina.
Grant Oakland, 55, was one of four guards who were injured during the riot at the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre last Thursday.
"I am appalled that you had no protective equipment at all for a riot situation," his sister posted on Facebook as he prepared to go into surgery.
