By Rebecca Peppiatt

Ex-Fremantle Dockers player Ryan Crowley has been arrested and charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend, former MAFS star Lauren Dunn, at a Claremont property on Wednesday.

Police say they were called to the house at about 10.15am.

Crowley, 41, was charged with nine offences including aggravated assault, deprivation of liberty, making threats and impeding another person’s breathing.

He was held in custody overnight and appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon wearing a grey hooded jumper and beige cargo pants.

During the hearing, the police prosecutor provided the magistrate with photographs of injuries sustained by Dunn allegedly at the hands of Crowley, saying they contained injuries to her wrist, the side of her body and chest area, as well as “fingers where nails had been ripped off”.

The court was told multiple family violence incident reports had been made concerning the couple, whose relationship was described by Crowley’s lawyer as “quite turbulent”.

The court heard in one of the FVIRs, Crowley alleged he was the victim of an assault, although the court was told “the majority” of them painted the 41-year-old as the perpetrator.

The court was told no charges or police orders had been made as a result of those reports, and Crowley had no criminal history, save for some minor traffic offences.

“They are untested allegations,” Crowley’s lawyer told the court.

“It is hearsay on hearsay.

“I ask the court to place little weight on those allegations.”

The court was also told Crowley “disputes any physical contact between them”, and Dunn sustained bruises photographed by police during an unrelated holiday to Bali.

Police prosecutors opposed bail, telling the court the charges were “horrendous allegations” and “the offending is too serious”.

Bail was granted and Crowley was released on a $20,000 surety and undertaking with conditions that he not contact Dunn and report to Northbridge Police Station twice a week.

Crowley and Dunn were thought to have publicly separated in 2023 after five years of dating.

Last year, Dunn appeared on reality TV show Married at First Sight on Nine, which is also the owner of this masthead.

Crowley played for the Dockers between 2003 and 2015, and in that time developed a reputation as one of the best taggers in the league.

In March 2015, he tested positive to a banned substance, thought to be from a painkiller not prescribed by the club doctor.

He was suspended for 12 months, then delisted by Freo before going on to play a season for Essendon.

Crowley will be back before the court in July.
