Bushfire forces evacuations as Perth braces for third day of heatwave

By Holly Thompson

Four fires broke out across Perth overnight, one forcing some locals to evacuate from their homes around 5am Wednesday morning, as the city prepares for the third day of a heatwave.

An emergency warning was issued for residents in the suburbs of Byford, Karrakup and Cardup and an evacuation centre was set up at the Serpentine-Jarrahdale Recreation Centre.

The fire was first reported in Karrakup at 1.25am.

The emergency has now been downgraded to a watch and act, but the fire remains uncontrolled and uncontained and is moving in a westerly direction.

A number of roads have been closed including Nettleton Road, which is closed between Barge Drive and Coronation Road.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.

Owners or carers of livestock, pets and companion animals should activate their own animal welfare plan.

In Armadale and South Perth, two structure fires also forced evacuations. In South Perth a fire gutted a third-storey apartment on Tuesday evening and in Armadale, another property also caught fire.

Firefighters worked to protect neighbouring properties from embers due to strong winds.

In the northern suburbs, at Joondalup Country Club, a fire involving hazardous materials was sparked, believed to have been caused by a lithium battery in a golf cart.

All three fires are now out.

The mercury is predicted to hit 37 degrees in Perth on Wednesday, after the city sweltered through an overnight low of 25.6 degrees.

An extreme heatwave warning is also in place for the Wheatbelt and eastern suburbs of Perth.
