A woman’s body has been found under a busy roadway in central Melbourne on New Year’s Day.
The woman was found under the Kings Way bridge at Southbank at about 4am on Sunday, according to police.
She was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
At this stage, there are no details about the woman, including her age or name.
Investigators at the scene would not confirm the nature of the woman’s death.
Police cordoned off a large area around the body, with a tent set up, and searched the area under the bridge.
The inside of a red Holden commodore sedan near the body was photographed extensively and later towed. The crime scene tape has since been removed.
She is the third woman to be found dead in the CBD since Tuesday, although police have not revealed whether this death is being treated as suspicious yet.
On Friday, homicide detectives found the body of a 51-year-old woman in a Docklands apartment while they were making inquiries into the death of a 31-year-old woman in the CBD earlier in the week.
Police say they are treating the deaths as suspicious and believe them to be linked.
A 22-year-old Huntingdale man was arrested in Preston and charged with murder, robbery and theft. He has been remanded in custody.
