A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a "horrific" alleged assault in the state's south-west.
Paul McDonough, a 37-year-old Warrnambool man, has been charged with serious violence offences after the alleged assault left a woman in a life-threatening condition on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old woman remains in a critical condition on life support in the Royal Melbourne Hospital with head and spinal injuries.
She was found in a Warrnambool unit after an unknown person alerted emergency services about 10am on Wednesday.
The woman was found at a home on Ocean Grove, in Warrnambool’s east.
She was taken to the Warrnambool Base Hospital for assessment and treatment and then flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
Mr McDonough has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury.
He has been remanded to appear at Warrnambool Magistrates Court on March 26.
