Lawyer X master list: 1297 people may have had their cases tainted
By Tammy Mills
More than 1000 people who received legal advice from duplicitous barrister Nicola Gobbo could be potentially impacted because of her role as a police informer.
The Royal Commission into the Management of Police Informants has compiled a master list of 1297 people who were represented by or received legal advice from Ms Gobbo.
The inquiry is investigating whether their cases were impacted by her role as registered informer 3838.
The staggering number emerged in the final day of public hearings into the conduct of Ms Gobbo and Victoria Police.
The inquiry also heard police had disclosed there were 21 other police informers who could be relevant to the royal commission. It's not known what sectors the informers work in.
After 127 days of public hearings, the royal commission has:
- Heard from 81 witnesses.
- Received another 120 statements.
- Produced more than 145,000 documents and tendered 1491 exhibits.
Commissioner Margaret McMurdo said the Office of Public Prosecutions was producing documents relating to 62 people so the royal commission could assess if their cases were affected.
There was still a considerable amount of material to obtain from Victoria Police, Ms McMurdo said, including 400 exhibits.
The inquiry will hold further public hearings in April focusing on Victoria Police informer management policy before its final report is handed down in July 1.
