Derryn Hinch suffers brain trauma after falling from Uber
Senator Derryn Hinch has suffered a brain trauma after falling and hitting his head as he was getting out of an Uber on Monday evening.
It is believed the shock-jock turned senator had consumed two glasses of wine during a night out before he slipped and was knocked unconscious on St Kilda Road.
"I stepped on the kerb and I fell over and I banged my head and I ended up in The Alfred hospital," Senator Hinch told Sky News.
A spokeswoman for the senator confirmed he had suffered a minor brain injury and spent a night in The Alfred hospital for observation.
Senator Hinch denied he had been drinking heavily at the time of the accident.
"Was I pissed? No, I wasn't," he said. "I'd had two glasses of wine with my dinner guest that night at their house and I came home and it all happened outside my house. I drink occasionally and I'm not stupid."
"I have a slight brain trauma. What scared me the most was I had to fly to Canberra yesterday afternoon ... I wanted to make sure I could actually fly and they kept me in overnight, let me out, and I'm fine."
The 74-year-old senator previously swore off liquor after having suffered blood poisoning, advanced cirrhosis and liver cancer brought on by heavy drinking. He underwent a life-saving transplant in 2011.
He is due to undertake medical tests on Thursday, amid concerns his heart may have been a contributing factor in the fall.
