Brighton Grammar School teacher Hamish Ryan is being investigated by police over sexual assault allegations.

Police said a 19-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man known to her.

Ryan was recently the head coach of a women’s youth basketball team in Sandringham and has also coached the Brighton Grammar squad.

He has been stood down from coaching the Sandringham Sabres women’s team in the Victorian Youth Championship while the investigation is under way.

Brighton Grammar headmaster Ross Featherston told the school community the secondary teacher had agreed to take leave.

In an email to parents on Tuesday, Featherston said the matters concerned the teacher’s work outside school.

“To the best of our knowledge, no BGS [Brighton Grammar School] student is impacted,” he said.

When contacted by The Age, Featherston said the school did not wish to comment on the matter.

Basketball Victoria said it was aware of the alleged incident involving Ryan from the Sandringham Sabres.

A spokeswoman said the Sandringham club was understood to be co-operating with police. “As the matter is currently being dealt with by Victoria Police, BV will not make any further comment until their investigation has been concluded,” she said.

The Sandringham Sabres declined to comment.

Bayside sexual offences and child abuse investigation team detectives are leading the investigation.

“Investigations into the incident remain ongoing,” police said on Wednesday.

A statement on the Brighton Grammar school website says it is “committed to fulfilling its duty of care to all students”.

“Brighton Grammar School is fully committed to the protection of children and young people during all school activities and environments both within and outside of school hours,” it says.
