Yule look up: Six-tonne tree will twinkle to voice of celebrity singer

A giant Christmas tree has returned to the heart of Brisbane.

The seasonal attraction is one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere, according to Brisbane City Council.

Towering 22 metres over King George Square, the tree is decorated with 8640 LED lights, more than 150 baubles and candy canes, and is crowned with a four-metre steel star.

The tree remained surrounded by fencing and construction equipment on Friday, which would be removed before the end of next week.

It would be lit during a family event on Friday, November 29, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, where singer Dami Im was scheduled to perform.

A light show in the Enchanted Garden at Roma Street Parkland and roaming live entertainment have also been confirmed.

The tradition dates back to the 1960s, with various incarnations of the tree erected outside Brisbane City Hall since.

“Christmas in Brisbane is a magical time of year for families to come together and enjoy Brisbane’s incredible lifestyle,” lord mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“I encourage residents to come along and enjoy the free festivities, cheer on our talented performers and spend time in the heart of our city supporting local businesses and local jobs.”
