One dead, four fighting for life after early-morning blaze north of Brisbane

By Julius Dennis

A person has died and four others are fighting for their lives after a massive house fire north of Brisbane on Sunday morning.

Fire crews rushed to Darcy Way, Lawnton, in the Moreton Bay region, at 5.45am to find the house engulfed in flames and the roof collapsed.

Four people were on the front lawn when emergency services arrived, with another found dead inside the house.

Two teenagers – a boy and a girl – and a man and woman in their 30s were treated by 18 paramedics before being rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in life-threatening conditions.

At the height of the blaze, residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated, but were able to return after it was contained about 7am.

Senior Sergeant Joseph Zitny said police were keeping an open mind about how the fire started, but said there was an electric scooter or bike inside the home.

“That has been one of our inquiries, and is one line that we are certainly progressing through,” Zitny said.

He said they were also looking into reports by neighbours of an argument before the fire, and said police had attended the home in the past.

“We are still to establish whether there was any relationship between those previous visits and what’s happened here today,” he said.

As of Sunday afternoon, police and fire department investigators were still at the scene.
