Man dies after massive storm hits Brisbane

A man has been killed during a severe storm in Murarrie on Friday evening as heavy rain, hail and almost 200km/h wind gusts ripped through parts of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to Murarrie Road just after 5pm after an unconscious man was found lying near fallen powerlines.

“Upon arrival, a 30-year-old Murarrie man was located with life-threatening injuries,” Queensland police said in a statement.

“He was declared dead a short time later.”

Police are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.

The storm hit Brisbane with reports of almost 200km/h wind gusts after north Queensland was rocked by Cyclone Jasper earlier this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning this afternoon for destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

It began near Sunnybank Hills and Archerfield where there were wind gusts up to 169km/h.

There was 53 millimetres of rain recorded in just 30 minutes at Round Mountain.
