‘It’s horrendous’: Young mother killed in alleged ‘targeted’ hit-and-run attack

By Cameron Atfield

Police believe a young mother was deliberately killed while walking along a Daisy Hill footpath in Brisbane’s south on Friday morning in a hit-and-run attack.

Detective Inspector Chris Knight said on Sunday police had charged a 24-year-old woman with murder after she allegedly targeted 23-year-old mother Kiesha Thompson with a silver Toyota Prado, mowing her down as she walked along Allamanda Drive just before 9am on Friday.

Thompson, from Daisy Hill, suffered critical head injuries and died in hospital that night.

Knight said the alleged victim had just dropped her daughter off at a nearby daycare centre when she was struck in what he described as a “targeted” attack.

“When I say targeted, we believe, and we will allege, that the vehicle involved in this incident had been in that area for an extended period of time leading up to the collision,” he said.

“For that reason, we don’t believe it was an unfortunate random traffic accident.”

Detectives have seized a vehicle, which has been secured in a forensic facility.

“There is visible damage to that car and we will get our forensic experts to explore comparisons between the damage to that vehicle and evidence that was recovered from the impact site because there were broken lenses, lights off the car, etc, that have potential forensic value,” he said.

Knight said he would not comment on an alleged motive for the attack as the matter was now before the courts.

“After dropping her daughter off, she was walking home,” he said. “It’s horrendous ... She had walked in there with a young child and she was walking home. It’s no more complicated than that.”

Asked whether it was a case of suspected domestic violence, Knight said: “Look, I don’t want to comment on it, and part of that is primarily because the matter is now before the court, but I am comfortable to say it is not as simple as that.”

The charged woman, from Goodna, was due to appear in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

Knight said police were keen to receive any dashcam footage from the area and were particularly eager to speak to the driver of an unmarked white bus and the company that owned it.

“The reason I ask is a lot of buses, of course, have a camera, and they have camera facilities to record passengers onboarding,” he said.

Police are appealing to witnesses, particularly the driver and passengers on board this bus that was travelling along Allamanda Drive about 8.50am on Friday, July 19, to come forward.

All motorists – including those with dashcam vision – who were travelling near Allamanda Drive between 5am and 10am on Friday were urged to contact police.
