Horror ‘high-impact’ crash lands five people in Brisbane hospitals
By Matt Dennien
Police are investigating whether speed played a role in a serious crash in Brisbane’s south-west in which two vehicles flipped and five people were hospitalised with life-threatening injuries.
Early details indicate a Mercedes sedan was heading south along Forest Lake Boulevard on Saturday night when it hit a Toyota Landcruiser just after 10pm at the intersection of Renoir Crescent in Forest Lake, police said in a statement.
The 28-year-old male driver of the Mercedes, his two 22-year-old male passengers and a 20-year-old female passenger, along with the 52-year-old female driver of the Toyota, were all taken to hospital.
Queensland Ambulance Service medical director Dr Stephen Rashford said all five suffered “a combination of life-threatening injuries”, including internal bleeding and multiple fractures.
The patients were being cared for at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital after the “very high-impact” crash, which required five ambulances, two critical care paramedics, an ambulance medical officer and a supervisor.
“This incident consumed significant resources on an already very busy Saturday night,” Rashford said. “We’d ask everyone to please stay safe on the roads.”
Police said a forensic crash unit investigation would establish whether speed was a contributing factor.
