Dendy Coorparoo extended closure leaves movie fans frustrated

By Nick Dent

Four months since closing for “unscheduled maintenance” the Dendy Coorparoo cinemas remain closed – and some locals have despaired of them reopening.

A note on the company website since March advises that “Dendy Coorparoo is currently closed for maintenance works. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

A Facebook post later that month advised: “We will make an announcement on our social channels when we have news.

“Thank you for your patience as we work through essential maintenance repairs required in the aftermath of Cyclone Alfred.”

But despite repeated enquiries by local would-be moviegoers, no further information has been provided.

Dendy Cinemas management did not respond to requests from this masthead for comment on the nature of the damage, or the timeline for reopening.

However, Dendy chief executive Sharon Strickland said the company was “deeply disappointed” about the current closure.

“This is an unfortunate time for Dendy and we are eagerly looking forward to welcoming our valued guests back and hope we can announce our reopening date in the coming weeks,” she said.

The cinema, which occupies the Coorparoo Square building on the corner of Old Cleveland Road and Cavendish Road, is part of the Dendy Icon Group owned by actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson.

Dendy Coorparoo opened at Coorparoo Square in 2015 on a 15-year lease.

Coorparoo Square management declined to comment on whether any repair work was being undertaken at the cinema.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife on local Facebook groups that the cinema chain has no plans to recommence screenings.

“Is it not time we as a community were given some indication as when Dendy intends to reopen?” Richard Jeffreys posted on the Coorparoo Community group, adding that Dendy’s silence is “damaging their reputation”.

Club Dendy members have been told their memberships have been extended to cover the period of closure.

Dendy’s other Brisbane cinema complex in Portside, Hamilton is operating as usual.
