‘Brisbane Arena’ already on Google Maps

By William Davis

“Brisbane Arena” has already been pinpointed on Google Maps … but it’s not clear why.

The former GoPrint site in Woolloongabba is earmarked for construction of a new entertainment hub before 2032.

The government had planned to build the facility, but will now attempt to attract private developers.

No plans have been drafted and approval could be years away, but the site in Woolloongabba was renamed “Brisbane Arena” on Google Maps this week.

The description lists it as a stadium with wheelchair access, and a primitive website is linked.

Records suggest the domain is registered to company Transcend Solutions PTY LTD, owned by Daniel James Harney.

Brisbane Times has contacted Harney for comment.

Dolphins reveal position in Cherry-Evans pursuit

By Nick Wright

The Dolphins have the funds to make a lucrative play for Daly Cherry-Evans, coach Kristian Woolf has declared.

The Queensland captain confirmed 2025 would be his final season with the Sea Eagles, but he might play on for the next two seasons.

Cherry-Evans was born in Redcliffe, although the allure of another premiership and a settled life in Sydney could ensure sides such as the Roosters have the salary cap space and temptation to trounce the idea of a romantic reunion north of the Tweed.

As Broncos coach Michael Maguire ruled out making a bid and Titans mentor Des Hasler refused to be drawn into questions about his former prodigy, Woolf put the Dolphins’ name in the ring for the 36-year-old halfback.

PM’s department accidentally declares government is in caretaker mode

By Josefine Ganko

Adding fuel to the Friday election call fire, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet has accidentally posted to X declaring the government is in caretaker mode … despite the fact the House of Representatives and Senate estimates are currently sitting.

The tweet was quickly deleted, in under four minutes, but Sky News captured a screenshot.

“The government is now operating in accordance with caretaker conventions pending the outcome of the 2025 federal election”, the post on the official PM&C account read.

It linked to a post with “Guidance on Caretaker Conventions”.

In a statement issued to Sky, PM&C apologised for the error and said they were looking into how it happened.

Nicholls appoints psychiatrist to review evidence for transgender medicine

By Sean Parnell

Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls has appointed psychiatrist Professor Ruth Vine to review the evidence behind hormone therapy for children with gender dysphoria.

Loading

Having already temporarily banned hormone therapy for new paediatric patients in the public system, Nicholls today released the terms of reference for the review, which will report back by November 30.

Nicholls said Vine was the best person to examine the “contested evidence surrounding the benefits of Stage 1 and Stage 2 hormone therapies for children with gender dysphoria”.

“Professor Vine has more than 25 years’ experience as a psychiatrist with a strong record of providing dedicated service to communities across the country, most notably as Victoria’s Chief Psychiatrist and as Australia’s first Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Mental Health in 2020,” he said.

“The review will consider input from a wide range of stakeholders, including clinicians and other relevant professionals and, of course, young people and their families.”

It is not clear from the terms of reference who will decide whether Queensland’s ‘pause’ on the provision of those services should be lifted.

The review is also required to report back months earlier than Nicholls had flagged, and comes as the National Health and Medical Research Council works on national guidelines expected in mid-2026.

New stats reveal Queensland’s population growth hotspots

By Sean Parnell

Greater Brisbane gained another 72,900 residents in 2023-24, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, while the population of the rest of Queensland only increased by 50,400.

Ripley in Ipswich welcomed the most new residents (up 2700), followed by Caloundra West/Baringa on the Sunshine Coast (2500) and Chambers Flat/Logan Reserve in Logan (2400), which also had the highest growth rate.

Net overseas migration (44,300) was the largest contributor to Greater Brisbane’s increasing population in the period, followed by net internal migration (15,600).

The notional population centre for Greater Brisbane was still in Highgate Hill, but shifted 80 metres further south in 2023-24, reflecting slightly higher growth overall in the southern suburbs.

Crisafulli confident Queensland can deliver Olympic projects in time

By Sean Parnell

Premier David Crisafulli has acknowledged Queensland will need more workers and more resources to deliver on its plan for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Amid concerns over the bulging construction pipeline, Crisafulli today insisted his LNP government could deliver a “golden era” of growth for the state.

“I don’t accept that, if you plan properly and deliver things on time and on budget, that we can’t meet the demand that’s there in the next 10 years,” he said.

“Yes, it’s a challenge, but it’s as much an opportunity.”

After Labor warned of pending LNP cuts to health projects, Crisafulli accused the opposition of spreading misinformation.

Music awards lose council funding for ‘promoting antisemitism’

By Sean Parnell

Brisbane City Council has stripped funding from the Queensland Music Awards after a jazz composer won a category for a pro-Palestine song.

Composer Kellee Green, whose song is titled “River to Sea”, used her acceptance speech to accuse the Australian government of helping Israel “kill innocent Palestinian men, women and children”.

In a statement today, Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said “music should be a positive force that brings people together, not tear them apart”.

“The promotion of antisemitism at Tuesday night’s Queensland Music Awards was utterly shameful and divisive,” he said.

“The decision to hand a major prize to an offensively titled anti-Jewish song raises serious questions about whether the awards have been hijacked by extremists.

“Allowing such vile hate speech to occur shows the awards seem to be no longer capable of achieving their own stated goal to ‘promote diversity and inclusion’.”

Schrinner said “the kind of divisive and offensive actions on display” at the awards “have no place in our city”.

Industry body QMusic, which produces the awards, receives funding from three levels of government, including $25,000 from council. CEO Kris Stewart said they were “deeply saddened” by the council’s decision.

Stewart said the awards were not meant to be a platform for political debate and, after community feedback, “we recognise there are learnings from this year’s event”.

A mother accused of murdering her seven-month-old boy has chosen not to enter a plea at her court arraignment, as the boy’s father pleaded not guilty.
