A man has died after sustaining serious head injuries during a “targeted attack” following an alleged break-in at his western Sydney home in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police are searching for two men after responding to calls from neighbours to attend a unit on Union Road in Penrith at about 1.30am on Saturday, where an alleged break-and-enter was in progress.

A man believed to be in his 60s was found with multiple injuries. Police and paramedics attempted to save his life, but his condition deteriorated, and he died at the scene.
Detective Inspector Michael Cantrell said two other men, described as Pacific Islander in appearance, were seen fleeing the area at the time officers arrived.
It is not known if these men knew the deceased, who was himself known to police.
“This is very frightening – a male was injured in his own home,” Cantrell said, adding that residents had alerted them to the incident.
“However, we do believe it was a targeted attack and there is no risk to the other residents in that unit block.”
Homicide officers are investigating the incident and a postmortem will take place.
Police believe the men entered the apartment by force before an altercation took place. Another resident present during the attack was uninjured and is helping police with their inquiries.
“Obviously they’re traumatised by the event and we’re putting support around them for that,” said Cantrell.
Police are canvassing the area for witnesses and CCTV footage, but are yet to establish how the men fled or the motivation for the attack.
“You do not deserve to die in your own home, and we’re taking this very seriously.”
“I ask for all witnesses in that area ... to contact Nepean police or Crime Stoppers with any information.”
More to come.
