By Eryk Bagshaw and Sally Rawsthorne

One man has died and another is under police guard after a rooftop stand-off with police in Tamworth.

On Saturday afternoon, NSW Police found a 47-year-old resident with critical head injuries and a 55-year-old male relative armed with a knife at a house in the northern NSW town.

The 55-year-old attempted to evade police by locking himself in a bedroom and then climbing onto the roof of the suburban home, still wielding the knife.

A dozen NSW Police officers surrounded the house and attempted to Taser the man on Saturday evening after he stabbed himself several times in the chest, threw roof tiles and pushed down a police ladder.

The man fell to the ground after being chased across the rooftop by police. He was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital under police guard and is in a serious but stable condition.

The 47-year-old was taken to the same hospital with stab wounds and died on Saturday night.

A NSW police spokesperson said Oxley Police District detectives and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad were investigating the incident.

In Sydney’s west on Saturday night, another man, Cody Flack-Butfield, climbed onto the roof of a house in Kingswood to avoid arrest on outstanding warrants.

Police had been looking for Flack-Butfield, 29, since January 9, when he failed to appear in Windsor Local Court on charges related to a car crash.

He failed to appear at court as required and in his absence he was convicted of failing to stop and assist after impact cause injury and driving while never licensed.

Magistrate Leanne Robinson also issued a warrant for Flack-Butfield’s arrest, which police attempted to execute on Saturday night.

The stand-off triggered a nine-hour siege involving police negotiators, the riot squad and NSW police rescue officers.

Flack-Butfield was arrested at 5am on Sunday and charged with assaulting and throwing a missile at a police officer, destroying property and drug possession.
